This warship was built upon a design based on the Leberecht Maass-class destroyers, known as Zerstörer 1936A type vessels. Compared to its precursor, this ship boasted larger proportions and significantly more firepower. It sported 150mm main gun mounts but retained the same torpedo armament as its predecessor.
