This is a photogrammetry scan of the bust of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. The original sculpture was created by Aleksey Leonov in 2016 (the sculptor, not the artistic cosmonaut). Bronze castings of this statue can be found all over the world, primarily at parks and educational institutions. More information on the statue can be found at the 'Dialogue of Cultures - United World' site.

Two versions are available, including the bust by itself, as well as one with a partial podium.
Both scans are approximately 1:10 in scale.

Print Settings

Supports:

Yes

How I Designed This

Photogrammetry - Taking the photos

Photos of the statue were taken using a Nikon D7000 camera with a 35-200 mm zoom lens attached to a tripod. I took photos of the statue moving in a series of circles, with the elevation and angle of the camera being adjusted with each complete circle.

Camera settings were:

ISO 100 (High quality)

F-stop number: 32 (for high sharpness)

Low shutter speed set by camera (to increased light to account for the previous settings)

2-second self-timer (to reduce camera shake)

Max zoom (200 mm) because the statue was surrounded by ivy, preventing me from getting close. The scan was done on an overcast day to prevent the movement of shadows.

Photogrammetry - Processing using Meshroom

The dataset was put into the free, open-source Meshroom software and processed without the depth mapping step due to technical issues. It was then decimated to 500,000 vertices and cleaned up in Blender. Scale was set by measuring the physical statue's square podium using a ruler and scaling to the same size in Blender. I replaced the podium with a cube of approximately the same size due to defects in the scan.
