Young Woman, Korinna

Corinna or Korinna was an accomplished ancient Greek lyric poet hailing from Tanagra in Boeotia, renowned by Herbert Weir Smyth as the most celebrated ancient Greek woman poet after Sappho. While ancient testimonies portray her as a contemporary of Pindar (who lived between approximately 522 and 443 BC), not all modern scholars accept this tradition as accurate, and some argue that she is more likely to have flourished in the Hellenistic period from 323 to 31 BC. Her surviving works, which consist only of fragments, center on local Boeotian legends. Although her poetry holds significance as the work of one of the few preserved female poets from ancient Greece, modern critics generally rate it unfavorably.
