Young woman holding flowers, circa 480-460 BC (body), head from Hellenistic period, crafted in Cypriot workshops, originally from Amathonte (Cyprus), unearthed during excavations led by Ed. Paridant, carved from limestone and painted. Inventory number A.875. (Found by Fr. Ed. Paridant of Aerschot in 1874). Located at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire within the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels, Belgium. Created using ReMake and ReCap tools from AutoDesk. This young woman sports a tunic and an outer coat adorned with red bands and crosses, as well as bracelets and a necklace around her neck, while holding a bouquet of daffodils in her left hand. The head portion was added to the body in modern times. Her right hand is positioned in a gesture common in ancient Greek depictions of young women (kore), showcasing how she holds onto her clothing. In contrast, the jewels and flowers are quintessentially Cypriot, as is her rigid posture and the simplified folds of her drapery. This sculpture likely represented an offering bearer, possibly standing in a sacred place. Follow me on Twitter at @GeoffreyMarchal for more updates.
