Yosemite's Cathedral Peak Southeast Buttress
myminifactory
This is an incredibly detailed 3D topographic map of the Southeast Buttress of Cathedral Peak in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite. It showcases with astonishing precision the extremely popular 5.7 climbing route that countless adventurers have tackled. I created this detailed model from a LIDAR dataset collected to analyze nitrogen export, which is freely available on http://opentopo.sdsc.edu/. The LIDAR point cloud was carefully gridded to achieve a high-resolution of 0.5 meters. You can view my step-by-step tutorial video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4-ICkvyJv0. The printing process took an impressive 18 hours to complete, with the model being sliced using Simplify3d software under default high-quality settings and printed in PLA on a reliable FlashForge 3D printer. This remarkable creation was even featured on the popular 3D Printing Today podcast, which is available for download on iTunes, Stitcher radio or directly from their source at http://threedprintingtoday.libsyn.com/.
