Yorktown Victory Monument - Liberty Statue

The Yorktown Victory Monument commemorates the surrender of Earl Cornwallis’army to George Washington on October l9th, 1781. The cornerstone was laid on October 18, 1881 for the Yorktown Centennial Celebration and the monument was completed on January 5, 1885. The monument is symbolic of the great victory, which was achieved at Yorktown through the French-American alliance. Today, complete with its “emblems” and “inscriptions,” as specified by the Congress in l78l and again in 1880, it still stands after a century occupying a vantage point in Yorktown. It is “within the line of defense of Cornwallis” and, with its grounds, covers four original Yorktown lots. At 100 feet high, it overlooks the harbor of the York River. Model by: Paul Davidson
