Yoga Narasimha – Bringer of Peace and Order to the World of Men

This Chola style sculpture in bronze assumes the position of a meditative yogi deep in thought. As an avatar of Vishnu, Narasimha is celebrated for his valour and martial strength after being sent to slay the evil ruler Hiranyakashipu. In his raised hands, he holds a conch shell and a pierced Chakra, whilst both of his lower hands rest in a peaceful and contemplative yogi pose. The fourth incarnation of Vishnu, Narasimha is seated cross-legged whilst his yogapatta (cloth tied around the knees) holds his legs firmly in place. This detailed sculpture sees Narasimha sitting on a sturdy plinth, which in turn rests upon an intricately designed pedestal, featuring a lotus petal motif. With a prominent mane and a human-like torso, it’s clear to see why this sculpture is also known as the hybrid Man-Lion. Above his striking and charismatic face lies the crescent moon and gemstone medallion that adorns his diadem. hindu-blog.com/2018/12/about-yoga-narasimha-form-yoga.html
