My take on a quick and easy spool holder for the MK2.

For a simple replacement of the stock parts, just print the arms and one rod and you're ready to go. As simple as "put rod through spool", "drop rod into arms". Even when you have different spools from different brands that are different widths it's still just drop-in and print.

For more advanced usage, as I've got installed on my MK2, print two sets of arms and one of each rod. If your spools are as narrow as the ones I use, you can fit up to 3 spools on the printer at once with that configuration, with 2 spools sharing the long rod and having an arm between them. Or more commonly, 2 spools on the printer with one on each rod, and easy swapping of whichever spool is not currently in use while the other one is printing.

I've been using these for months now, and there doesn't seem to be any need to have things on the ends of the rod to keep them from sliding around. Printing them with thick layers results in matching grooves in both the rod and top of the arms and with the weight of a spool pressing down it all just stays put.

Print Settings

Printer:

Prusa Original i3 MK2

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

.2

Infill:

20%

Notes:

I've done the arms at 0.2mm and the rods at 0.35mm. But really its all just straight vertical printing, you can probably get away with the thickest layers your printer will do and get them done faster. I do like to do them with 3 perimeters for strength.
Feel free to scale the rods in Z-height if different lengths would work better for the spools you have.
How I Designed This

The original spool holders from the Prusa Research GitHub are built with OpenSCAD, with short 16mm-diameter cylinders extruded from the arms. All I did was change those into 16mm holes through the arms instead and cut the tops off to allow dropping them into place. Then just a couple of 16mm cylinders as rods and done.

Category: 3D Printer Parts
