Reproduction occurs right on the site. Yaxchilan is a well-known archaeological site in Mexico, discovered by Teoberto Maler in 1881 and excavated between 1897 and 1904 by Alfred Maudslay. The site is located near the Usumacinta River in the state of Chiapas. The Lintel is an inscribed stone slab that is one of the most important artifacts found at Yaxchilan. It measures 2 meters long, 0.8 meters wide and 0.3 meters thick and bears a carved inscription in hieroglyphics, which describes the dedication of a temple by a ruler named Bird Jaguar IV. The Lintel was first discovered in 1897 and was later moved to the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City for safekeeping. In 1981 it was returned to Yaxchilan where it is now displayed in a specially constructed museum on site. A replica of the Lintel can be seen at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, which has an extensive collection of artifacts from Mesoamerica.
