It was occupied from the 4th century BC until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century AD, with most of its major structures dating to the Classic Period (AD 200-800). The site's name comes from the Yucatec Maya language and means "green water" or "place of green water." A lintel from Yaxchilan is housed at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
