Yarn Spinner

Yarn Spinner

Robust yarn spinner crafted from simple parts and hardware, featuring somewhat adjustable tension. Design utilizes a 2x608 bearings setup back-to-back, securely clamped together to form a compact and sturdy base. The spindle stands at 100mm tall, perfectly designed to accommodate 2.5oz yarn balls. # Parts: - 1 M8x30mm socket-head-cap screw (SHCS) - 2 608 skateboard bearings ("speed" bearings preferred, loose and spinning freely like fidget spinners; precision bearings too greasy for this application) - 2 M8 standard washers (fender washers not recommended; must not touch outer shell of bearings to spin freely) - 1 M8 Nylon lock nut - 3 M3x10mm socket-head-cap-screws (SHCS) # Assembly: - Insert the M8 screw into the coupler and push/turn until fully inserted. The head should sit below the top of the coupler. - Insert 608 bearings into the base, one in the bottom and one in the top. The top bearing should be flush with the top surface; the bottom inserted all the way inside. - Add M8 washer to M8 screw, then insert through base bearings. Turn over and add second M8 washer to screw, followed by M8 lock nut. Tighten until clamping the washer against the bearing, but not too tightly – just snug enough for a secure fit. - The coupler should spin freely at this point; if it doesn't, loosen the lock nut slightly and check again. If the coupler spins freely but is loose and wobbly, tighten the lock nut barely. - Insert M3 screws through top spindle holes until they protrude slightly through the bottom, aligning with holes on top of coupler and screwing into place. The coupler holes are slightly undersized; the threads will cut their way in for a secure hold. - The screw heads should be flush or slightly below the top surface of the spindle when fully inserted – but avoid overtightening to prevent stripping plastic threads. --- A STEP CAD file is included, useful for easier remixes. A M8x30 shoulder bolt with M6 threads and associated lock nut are featured in the model but not necessary for smooth performance. Regular M8 hardware will work just as well if available.
