Early yari are believed to have originated from Chinese spears. These hoko yari, dating back to the Nara period (710–794), are thought to be their ancestors. Initially present in Japan's early history, the term yari didn't appear in written records until 1334 and this type of spear didn't gain popularity until the late 15th century. The original warfare of the bushi was not designed for commoners; it was a ritualized combat typically between two warriors who would challenge each other via horseback archery. However, Japan's attempted invasions by the Mongols in 1274 and 1281 revolutionized Japanese weaponry and warfare. The Mongols employed Chinese and Korean foot soldiers wielding long pikes and fought in tight formations.
