Yamuna is a revered Hindu goddess associated with the river, also known as Yami. In Hindu mythology, Yamuna Devi is the offspring of Surya, the sun god, and his consort Saranyu, and she shares a sibling bond with the death god Yama. Vedic tradition portrays Yama and Yami as humanity's first mortal pair. Yamuna initially appears in the Ṛg Veda as Yami, where she makes a passionate plea to her brother Yama for cohabitation, citing it as the key to perpetuating the human race. However, Yama declines Yami's overtures due to his strong religious convictions. As a result, Yamuna is depicted as a goddess embodying limitless love and passion, uninhibited by reason in her emotional expressions. This episode does not impair their sibling relationship or diminish Yamuna's affection for her brother. Despite being the god of death, Yama is regarded as one of the most righteous entities, earning him the title of "King of Righteousness" (Haberman 137). When Yama eventually visits his sister, she greets him with honor and delightful cuisine that pleases Yami. In response, he grants her a blessing: if any brother and sister come together to worship Yamuna and bathe in her sacred waters, they will never encounter the gates of hell (Kumar, James).
