I was browsing through various 3D printing websites, looking for a printable gift for my friend's daughter for Christmas. I came across tons of M___crafty things and thought one of those ore nodes with lights would be cool. So, I printed a couple, experimented with them, and decided they just weren't fancy enough. But I wasn't the first to think of this idea. There are plenty of similar projects out there, most using LED tea lights or simple LED lights connected to coin cell batteries. In typical fashion, I decided to over-engineer a solution that's way more functional than necessary while letting me play with lots of electronic components and microcontrollers. I went through several prototypes during the development of YAMC. I tried different microcontrollers, LEDs, switches, power connectors, potentiometers, and even included a microphone in one design. Eventually, I scaled back, decided on a final set of functionality, and limited the electronics to cap costs. That said, I really hope you build this project and enjoy it. It was a lot of fun to design, a labor of love to complete, and a real challenge to stay focused on.
