YACS Yet Another CNC-cut Spirograph cnc/laser
cults3d
This is YACS, yet another CNC-cut spirograph created with precision and passion. As a unique feature, it employs hypocycloidal (round) teeth that optimize machining on a CNC machine, eliminating the difficulties posed by sharp edges found in involute gears. To add an extra layer of complexity, I've incorporated three triangles on each planet gear, resulting in fascinating shapes that will captivate anyone who lays eyes on them. The gearset was carefully chosen to ensure optimal performance: the sun gear features 48, 50, and 52 teeth, while the planets boast 39, 40, and 42 teeth. This combination yields an impressive nine distinct rosettes that showcase the intricate beauty of this design. I built YACS on a desktop CNC machine by Stepcraft using a spiral-toothed 1.2 mm flute, which proved to be an ideal tool for the task. The Pertinax material used was generously donated by a reader and is perfect for this project: it's incredibly hard, extremely smooth, and can be machined with ease. To ensure successful completion, I recommend cutting the inner wheels first. For those interested in creating smaller versions of YACS, a laser cutter might be a viable alternative tool to consider.
