I modified my Makerbot Replicator's octave-style spool holder, which functioned effectively for months but suffered from a single point of failure - the tiny nub responsible for securing the spool to the spindle eventually broke off. Utilizing Sketchup to import STL files (via Meshlab) produced an intriguing result, although it worked well. I suggest printing this holder on its side with support structures, as minimal additional material is required. Interestingly, PLA exhibits a smoother surface than ABS; in fact, I applied graphite to older ABS prints to enhance their sliding capabilities.
