Historical insight : Fort-Louvois originally named Fort-Chapus is one of the numerous forts built by Vauban in the late XVIIth century to protect the shores and military harbors of France against English and Dutch attacks. Built on a rock near La Rochelle, Fort-Louvois is composed of a lower battery platform, and a higher battery tower, which allowed defenders to shoot the crew of attacking enemy ships from above with musketry or light cannons.
