Here's a simple redesign for the blade slot that makes it easier to push the blade in without breaking the outer plastic part. I broke six of these before making this change and now have not broken one since. To insert the blade, hold it carefully with pliers and feed it into the slot in the direction shown in the image. Once partly inserted, place the nose of the pliers in the slot in the blade and push down as far as possible. Then grab the blade again with the pliers, grip tightly, and push all the way in until the tip of the blade sits inside the slot in the plastic wall. This redesign is specifically designed to hold easily found surgical blades, such as code 10A, shown in the image. These blades are widely available on online marketplaces like eBay and Amazon.
