The M1 Abrams' precursor, the XM1, would rapidly become the iconic American main battle tank. Equipped with superior armor and a potent diesel engine, the XM1 maintained exceptional mobility despite its substantial mass. A batch of XM1 prototypes were constructed; this particular model closely resembled the fully realized M1 Abrams.
