Xiphactinus is an extinct genus of large predatory marine bony fish that dominated Late Cretaceous waters. Alive, these gargantuan predators would have resembled massive, fanged tarpons. The species Portheus molossus, described by renowned paleontologist Cope, is now recognized as a junior synonym of Xiphactinus audax.
