Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), an annual plant, thrive in warm, temperate regions free of frost, preferring fields, grasslands, and sunny hillsides. Originating from Central to Southern America, they belong to the Solanaceae family along with tobacco, chili peppers, and potatoes. Initially considered poisonous upon entering Europe, tomatoes' culinary use emerged in 18th-century Italy. Industrial production began around 1850 in Parma. Today, worldwide tomato production amounts to 125 million tonnes annually, with China as the largest producer at 31 million tonnes. Their original Aztec name was Tomati.
