Nicotiana tabacum, also known as tobacco, is a perennial plant that can grow up to 2 meters tall (usually 1 meter). Native to Central America, it thrives in highlands and hillsides with temperate climates. Historically, Central American natives utilized the plant for both ritualistic hallucinogenic purposes and as food prior to European contact. In Europe and North America, tobacco rapidly gained popularity despite concerns about its health risks. The cultivation of this successful plant played a significant role in sparking the transatlantic slave trade from Africa to North America. By 2010, world tobacco production was projected to reach over 7.1 million tonnes, an increase from 5.9 million tonnes in 1997/99. This growth is attributed to a steady annual increase of approximately 1.5% in the number of smokers, with a projected 1.3 billion smokers by 2010.
