The Garden Strawberry, Fragaria x ananassa, is a perennial plant that grows 33-48cm tall, originating from a cross between Fragaria Virginiana and Fragaria chiloensis. It thrives in light woodland or forest edge environments with moist, well-drained soil. Native to temperate, humid climates, this cultivated strawberry must not be confused with the wild Woodland Strawberry (Fragaria vesca). Historically, the Strawberry, a Rosaceae family member, was viewed as a paradise flower and often represented Christ and the Trinity in art. Harvest typically occurs mid-April to May, and nearly all strawberries are hand-picked.
