Ohia Lehua, scientifically known as Metrosideros polymorpha, is a broadleaf evergreen tree or shrub that thrives in Hawaii's diverse landscapes. This versatile species can reach heights between 1 meter to 14 meters and grows on most soils from sea level up to 2500 meters. Ohia Lehua flourishes in wet and dry forests, subalpine shrublands, and seasonally wet forests, where it shares dominance with Koa (Acacia koa). Remarkably, this hardy plant can even grow on recent lava streams. Its form varies from a small shrub to a tall tree, with the shrub form being more common at high altitudes. The trunk's appearance also exhibits a range of characteristics, from rough and twisted to smooth and straight. Historically, native Hawaiians utilized Ohia Lehua wood for constructing canoes and statues.
