Lotus, scientifically known as Nelumbo sp., is a genus of aquatic plants with large showy flowers that originate from China and Southeast Asia. These plants grow in hillsides and open woodlands thriving in warm and humid climates. The Lotus species are unique due to their thermoregulation ability, which allows them to control their temperature to attract insects for reproduction. During flowering, the blossoms can heat up to above 30°C even when the air is only 10°C, releasing an aroma that lures insects seeking both pollen and a comfortable environment for mating and flight preparation. Interestingly, Lotus plants' closest living genetic relatives are Plane trees.
