Bursera Simaruba: Gumbo Limbo Bursera Simaruba is called many names, including Gumbo Limbo, Copperwood, Chaca, and Turpentine Tree. It is native to tropical regions of the Americas, the Carribean, Brazil, and Venezuela. It is also prevalent in the Pentenes Mangroves ecoregion of the Yucatan, where it is a subdominant plant species to mangroves. The Gumbo Limbo is a small to medium sized tree growing up to 90 ft tall, with shiny red bark. The red peeling park has earned this tree the nickname of Tourist Tree, an homage to the regions regularly sunburnt visitors.
