The Grey Mangrove (Avicennia marina), a broadleaf evergreen, has a height range of 0.5 to 9 meters. Native to Northwestern Australia, New Zealand, and Tropical Pacific regions, it thrives in intertidal zones of estuarine areas with warm and temperate climates. Known as White Mangrove or Manawa (Maori name), this species forms aerial roots called pneumatophores to absorb oxygen when lower roots are submerged in water; these roots are usually not developed if the mangrove grows on dry ground. This resilient plant can tolerate a mix of salty and fresh waters, though it may experience stunted growth in areas with excessively high salt concentrations.
