The Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) is a pinnate palm with leaves surrounding its stem, distinct from other palms that have leaves at specific angles. Native to Northeastern Australia's Cape Melville, it thrives in sunny, well-drained, gravely sandy soils on exposed gravel hills. Known only to the Aboriginal people until revealed by Wodyeti in 1979, its discovery led to a surge in demand that caused widespread overcollection and near extinction. Today, it is protected in its native area and highly sought after as an ornamental palm worldwide.
