The European Spindle (Euonymus sp.) is a broadleaf deciduous shrub or small tree that grows 1.22m to 2.39m tall. This species has a worldwide distribution, thriving in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, particularly at forest edges on deep, fertile soil. Characteristics of the European Spindle include taller growth and more tree-like features compared to its smaller Asian counterparts. Traditionally, Euonymus wood was used for making spindles, hence its name. However, all parts of the plant are poisonous to humans, while serving as an essential food source for birds.
