The Banyan tree (Ficus bengalensis), reaching up to 20 meters in height, is native to India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, thriving in monsoon and rainforest environments under warm, moist climates. Known for its root systems that develop into robust trunks upon touching the ground, it's sometimes referred to as a 'strangler fig'. As these roots can envelop other trees or structures, older Banyan trees can spread over an extensive area. The Great Banyan, near Kolkata, India, is 200 years old, covers two acres, and has numerous trunks. This sacred tree is often found near temples in India.
