Sea Mammal Bone Burnishing Tool is also known as a bone pencil. Found on Sanak Island, Alaska, CAT# XFP-056-18. XFP-056 features large house depressions along the south shore of Pauloff Harbor, Sanak Island, Alaska. Radiocarbon dates confirm this site spans 300 CE to 800 CE, with upper levels potentially dating back to the 13th century. These artifacts were scanned using a Faro Edge Arm or Minolta Vivid 9i. Geomagic and Polyworks software processed them. ZBrush used 4-8 photos for texture. Research grants NSF 0326584, NSF 0508101, NSF 1139266, NSF 1321411 supported this project. H. Maschner led the research as Principal Investigator. Initial digitizing work occurred at the IVL, Idaho State University, while subsequent processing was completed at Global Digital Heritage. Fieldwork and analysis were conducted in collaboration with the Pauloff Harbor Tribe and Sanak Corporation, who granted permission.
