XFP-054 Jadite Biface Fragment, Sanak Island, AK XFP-054 marks an early village nestled in a dune area on Sanak Island's south side, Alaska. The dune's deflation reveals dozens of well-preserved houses and site features, clearly demonstrating the village organization during this time period between 2200 and 1600 BCE. This was also the era when Hot Springs Village on the Alaska Peninsula began to be occupied by early inhabitants. These artifacts were captured using either a Faro Edge Arm or a Minolta Vivid 9i scanner. Further processing took place in Geomagic or Polyworks software. For texture, 2-8 photos from each artifact were used in Geomagic Wrap. The Sanak Island artifacts are presented as part of research conducted under grants NSF 0326584, NSF 0508101, NSF 1139266, and NSF 1321411. H. Maschner led the research efforts as Principal Investigator. Original digitization work was done at Idaho State University's IVL, with subsequent processing completed by Global Digital Heritage. Fieldwork and analysis were conducted with permission from and in collaboration with the Pauloff Harbor Tribe and the Sanak Corporation.
