The X-15 rocket plane shattered speed and altitude records for nearly a decade, soaring through the skies at an incredible Mach 6.7 and piercing the atmosphere to an astonishing height of 354,200 feet between 1959 and its retirement in 1968. Operated by both the Air Force and NASA, this powerful aircraft was released from a sturdy B-52 carrier plane before embarking on its high-speed mission.
