Wyrm
thingiverse
I've wanted to craft a magnificent Dragon/Wyrm creature with a hollow core for quite some time, enabling users to channel smoke through it, potentially serving as an exquisite pipe or intricate component of a high-end bong. Initially, I utilized a Processing program to generate a height map, subsequently producing an OpenSCAD polyhedron in the form of the Wyrm's base. The resulting shape was reminiscent of shifting sand dunes, transporting me to the vast desert landscapes depicted in Frank Herbert's Dune series, one book of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Driven by an insatiable desire for that prized 'spice,' as Dune Wyrms are rumored to produce, my endeavors continue unabated. The question of whether this masterpiece is printable remains up in the air; to alleviate uncertainty, I intend to first print a small version, solely to determine if it necessitates supports during fabrication. At present, I treat this ambitious project with caution, understanding that its future outcomes depend on continued experimentation and adaptation. In order to replicate my results, follow these detailed instructions: separate constructions are necessary for the Wyrm and its Surface, created from OpenSCAD file Wyrm.scad and Processing program SurfaceMaker.pde, which in turn generates files SurfaceMaker.scad and subsequently produces an STL file. Wyrm.stl emerges directly from OpenSCAD processing, whereas SurfaceMaker creates its own .STL through the SurfaceMaker.scad code. By combining these two components in Scene.scad, one may yield a seamless watertight structure without imperfections or issues. For users inclined to tailor the shape and movement of their Dragon, I advise editing the trigonometric expressions within Wyrm.scad; you may experimentally align this form with the haphazard landscapes randomly generated by SurfaceMaker, ultimately relying on a mix of testing and improvisation. Of course, there's no need for you to bother with altering anything – your Dune creature is already stunning just as it stands.
With this file you will be able to print Wyrm with your 3D printer. Click on the button and save the file on your computer to work, edit or customize your design. You can also find more 3D designs for printers on Wyrm.
