At the outbreak of WWI, British forces were uniquely aware of the need for dull uniforms that could blend into the battlefield environment. The 1902 uniform pattern was deliberately understated in its design, making it simple to mass-produce. General Service buttons became a standard feature on uniforms, replacing regiment-specific buttons. This meant every regiment received standardized issue, with shoulder badges used to identify each unit, as seen in this illustration. Alongside the uniform, you see some of the equipment carried by WWI soldiers on their webbing. This example includes a water bottle in its felt case, a haversack and a bayonet in its scabbard. In addition to these items, soldiers also carried extra gear like ammunition pouches and an entrenching tool.
