History The B-type bus was a groundbreaking vehicle, built in Walthamstow and replacing the X-type bus as the primary mode of transportation. It boasted a 34 seat capacity, cementing its status as one of the first mass produced buses. The first bus began carrying passengers in 1911, marking a significant milestone in the history of public transportation. By 1913, an impressive 2500 B-type buses had entered service, revolutionizing the way people traveled. Designed by Frank Searle, chief engineer of the LGOC, this innovative vehicle featured a wooden frame, steel wheels, a worm drive and chain gearbox. Its top speed was an impressive 16 miles per hour (26 km/h), exceeding the legal speed limit at that time of 12 miles per hour (19 km/h). However, under optimal conditions, the B-type bus could reach speeds of up to 30-35 miles per hour (48-56 km/h).
