Žemaitė (literally female Samogitian) – a pen name of Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė; born on June 4, 1845 in Bukantė near Plungė, Lithuania - died on December 7, 1921 in Marijampolė. Žemaitė was a prominent Lithuanian/Samogitian writer. Born into impoverished gentry, she played a major role in the Lithuanian National Revival movement. Her writing style focused on realistic portrayals of peasant life. On June 4, 2014, Google honored Žemaitė with a Doodle tribute.
