The USS Baldwin DD-624 was a formidable WWII US destroyer that met its fate by running aground in 1962 off the coast of Rhode Island. According to historical records, this incident led to the scuttling of the vessel, which has since become a fascinating wreck site for marine explorers. In 2019, NOAA's Technology Exploration Cruise made exploring the USS Baldwin wreck a pivotal part of their mission. The expedition team was able to scan the starboard flybridge area, revealing an open bridge door and an astonishing sight: the wreck had become a sheltered haven for various marine life, including fish, which used it as a sanctuary. A closer inspection revealed an alarming amount of fishing gear stuck all over the wreck site. This striking visual has been colorized using advanced technology that takes into account the laser remission data, resulting in a stunning blue-to-green hue map. We extend our gratitude to NOAA Ocean Exploration Research and the Global Foundation of Ocean Exploration for their tireless efforts in making this incredible find possible. Special thanks also go out to the crew of the Okeanos Explorer for their dedication to exploring our vast oceanic territories.
