Wreck of the USS Baldwin The WWII US destroyer USS Baldwin DD-624 suffered a catastrophic fate when it ran aground in 1962 off the coast of Rhode Island, US. According to Wikipedia, this devastating incident led to its scuttling. A key aspect of the NOAA's 2019 Technology Exploration Cruise was exploring the wreckage of this historic ship. The object depicted here is the range finder and fire control system of the guns, which has been positioned atop the bridge and currently serves as the highest point on the wreck. The scan in question represents a manual fusion of multiple scans. Colorization of the point-cloud employed a brown to yellow hue map based on the remission of the laser used in the scanning process. NOAA Ocean Exploration Research, the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration, and the crew of the Okeanos Explorer deserve special thanks for making this incredible discovery possible.
