In the summer of 2017, the Cultural Heritage Agency of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern carefully unearthed, meticulously recorded, and thoroughly removed two shipwrecks in Northern Germany's Bay of Greifswald before the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline began. This 3D model vividly displays the scans of the various excavation phases of wreck Fpl. 64 (see wreck Fpl. 63). A sturdy clinker-built trading vessel, this one was seized and deliberately sunk by the Swedish army in the summer of 1715, along with at least 12 other vessels, to form a strong ship barrier at the entrance to the Bay of Greifswald, effectively keeping enemy navies at bay during the Great Northern War. The strategy proved successful until a Swedish deserter expertly guided the Danish navy through a secret passage in the barrier (see image); by December 1715, the region was firmly under Danish control.
