In the sweltering summer of 1873, French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux embarked on a vacation with his wife and young son Charles at the picturesque estate of Alexandre Dumas in Puys, just outside the charming coastal town of Dieppe. The inspiration for this masterpiece struck him when his child, despite a painful arm injury, radiated joy through tears. Crafted from gleaming white marble, this poignant work premiered at the 1874 Salon, captivating both the general public and art critics with its masterful blend of tragedy and technical virtuosity, yielding two additional marble replicas during Carpeaux's lifetime.
