During World War I, millions upon millions of shells were unleashed in a brutal bid to bring an end to the conflict that was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Initially, these shells arrived at the front lines in organized fashion, catering to a wide range of shapes and sizes to fit any given cannon, but as the war dragged on and demand for explosive ordnance skyrocketed, a simple yet highly effective design began to dominate the battlefield, holding its own charge with minimal external markings aside from what soldiers themselves adorned it with for personal use.
