Wood world maps are gaining immense popularity, but their hefty price tag often overshadows the simplicity of producing them with a laser cutter. I discovered a versatile CC0 world map design on Wikipedia, which I streamlined by eliminating smaller islands, merging larger ones, and even connecting an island to a continent. This thoughtful simplification greatly facilitated wall mounting. Next, I nested the entire globe within a single 1200x600mm sheet of wood. Although this resulted in some countries having mismatched wood grain directions, it significantly reduced wood usage. To make the most of the remaining space, I incorporated additional features. However, removing excess wood after laser cutting proved to be a challenging task. In hindsight, adding extra cutting lines would have made waste removal much easier next time around.
