Workmate Pipe Clamp

Sometimes imitated, and often battered, the Black and Decker Workmate is an invaluable asset found adorning the walls of sheds of handy people from sea to shining sea. Whether its the time-proven design or the familiar orange and black color scheme, the Workmate continues to be highly successful. Having been incrementally refined since its invention by Ron Hickman in the 1960s, to-date the Workmate has sold, according to Wikipedia, over 30 million units.

While incredibly versatile, clamping tubular objects in-place is not one of its many virtues. This clamp is based on another of my son's designs, in this case borne of necessity when a building a science project. The provided design files should accommodate 75mm OD PVC storm-water pipe, but we've parameterized the clamp using OpenSCAD to allow it to be readily customized for your DIY needs (add a millimeter or so to allow the pipe to be easily inserted).

Printed in PLA using a 20% infill the clamp tackled proved sufficiently robust not only to hold the storm-water pipe fast while being worked upon, but also to enable our Workmate to perform a passable reenactment of the 1969 moon landing … yup maybe don't try that one at home. Instead, perhaps while waiting for your build plate to reach temperature, the story behind the Workmate is an interesting read (if only for the 1976 TV advert).
