A V8 engine consists of eight cylinders arranged in two banks of four on the crankcase, with either a right angle or narrower angle between them. It is essentially two straight-4 engines sharing a common crankshaft. However, this simple configuration can lead to vibrations in large displacements due to secondary dynamic imbalance issues. To overcome this, most V8s since the 1920s have employed crossplane crankshafts with counterweights for smoother operation. Crossplane V8 engines are smother than V6s while being less costly than V12s. Racing V8s, on the other hand, often use single plane crankshafts to allow faster acceleration and optimized exhaust systems.
