The Woolly Rhinoceros was built for life during the ice age, as evidence from preserved bones, skeletons, and mummified remains found in permafrost allows a precise reconstruction of its appearance. A powerful creature with short legs, a tall neck, and a large head with two horns, the front horn measuring up to 100cm in length resembling a saber. Its body was covered in thick chestnut fur and had a half-meter long tail with a switch of coarse hair. The woolly rhinoceros utilized its mighty horns for defense against predators or opponents, but also showed signs of using them to dig up food from under the snow. The majority of discoveries of this species are found in northern Eurasia, with the range reaching its peak during the second half of the Pleistocene. Despite this, they were spotted as far south as Italy, grazing on riverbank hayfields alongside hippos, feasting on steppe herbs, bush shoots, and other vegetation. While often considered calm, these creatures had a hot temper and could suddenly attack anyone in their vicinity. Evidence of human interaction with woolly rhinoceroses can be found in cave drawings created by early humans.
