These vintage goggles hail from the Dundee Heritage Trust's collection, safeguarding the Royal Research Ship Discovery that embarked on the British National Antarctic Expedition in 1902. Goggles like these were indispensable for trekkers traversing harsh Antarctic landscapes, shielding their eyes from the intense sunlight reflecting off snow and preventing painful burns. This particular pair was used by Scott during his expedition aboard the Discovery from 1901 to 1904, with his initials "RFS" carved into the upper side. The goggles feature leather straps for secure attachment and a distinctive cut-out design that enhances visibility. Scott opted for these over glass lenses, which often fogged up in extreme conditions.
