WOODEN MONOCOQUE

A wooden monocoque is a type of structure used in the construction of lightweight wooden aircraft. In a monocoque structure, the outer skin of the aircraft is load-bearing, meaning it is designed to carry the stresses and strains of flight, rather than just serving as a covering. In a wooden monocoque design, the skin of the aircraft is made from layers of thin wooden strips or veneers that are laid up over a form, or mold, and glued together with a strong adhesive. The resulting structure is very strong and lightweight, with the natural stiffness and strength of the wood providing excellent structural properties.Historically, wooden monocoque structures were used in early aircraft designs, such as those built by the Wright brothers, but they have largely been replaced by metal and composite materials in modern aircraft construction. However, wooden monocoque construction is still used in some small experimental aircraft and ultralights.
