Overview Lanterns are literally baskets of light, enclosed with wooden frames and paper to prevent the flame from being extinguished by wind. Small versions made of wood are used in shrines, while sturdy stone or metal lanterns are placed outdoors in temple gardens. Hanging lanterns also exist. The lantern originated with Buddhism's arrival in Japan and became more common during the Nara period when temples were being built extensively. Many were likely used by monks. By the Heian period, they began to be used as offerings at Shinto shrines as well. As time passed, indoor lanterns evolved into candles and collapsible torches for carrying. Outdoor fixed versions are often referred to as lanterns, found in temples, shrines, and old roads. There are also indoor lanterns for Buddhist rituals and portable ones for festivals like the Nenbutsu Festival in Aomori and the Mountain Deer Lantern Festival in Kumamoto. Before modern times, they were used as lighthouses at ports. Oil or candles have been used as light sources, while electric and propane-powered versions exist today. Some lanterns, such as those found in Japanese gardens, are purely decorative rather than functional.
