This artifact was salvaged from the shipwrecked vessel Betsy, situated in the York River off the coast of Yorktown, Virginia. The remnants of Betsy were remarkably well-preserved, allowing for extensive data collection on eighteenth-century shipbuilding techniques and interior design. It was part of a fleet of ships deliberately sunk by British forces in 1781. Refer to John Broadwater's 1992 publication "Shipwreck in a Swimming Pool: An Assessment of the Methodology and Technology Utilized on the Yorktown Shipwreck Archaeological Project" (Historical Archaeology, Vol. 26, No. 4). This artifact was digitized using a Go!Scan 50 at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources' archaeological curation facility in Richmond, Virginia. The model is made available courtesy of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, which has granted permission for non-commercial educational use.
